Whilst we will continue to keep fundraising through our cancer appeals for equipment to support cancer treatment, we are also working to help prevent cancer, encourage patients to seek treatment earlier, and support people to live their lives well – during and after treatment.
Lack of sanitary bins in male toilets in public places affects men who need to wear pads, pouches, stomas, catheters, colostomy or ileostomy bags as a result of their cancer treatment. We’ve launched Bins for Boys in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Mid Wales to encourage pubs, restaurants, cafes, leisure centres, workplaces- any community venue with customer toilets to commit to providing a sanitary bin in their male toilets.
We are working in partnership with NHS Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin ICB, and Qube – an Oswestry-based, community resource charity, to raise awareness about cancer in the wider community with a particular focus in groups where English is not their first language. We want to work with community volunteers to support and train them to become cancer champions, helping them encourage their peers to be more cancer aware and accept cancer screening invites.
iCan is a cancer support service run by our health partners Lifestyle Fitness. It is aimed at those going through cancer, as well as those living beyond treatment, to encourage and support people to live an active lifestyle and look after themselves mentally, emotionally and physically.
Cooling Caps – helping to prevent hair loss caused by Chemotherapy Treatment.
Radar Keys –allowing patients access to disabled toilet facilities while out and about, reducing stress and worry about leaving the home. We have purchased 1000 keys which are being widely distributed around the county.
TVs – We have purchased eight new televisions for patients in isolation rooms on the Oncology Ward at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
These are just a few examples of the projects that we are able to fund through the charity.
We exist to improve the lives of everyone impacted by cancer in our community and we are now funding a wide range of free to access projects for those living with and beyond cancer.
The LiveLife Cancer Awareness Service has been launched to deliver a meaningful impact on the wider community, helping people have a greater understanding about cancer, how we can live healthier lives to try and prevent it, and where to turn for assistance if there are any concerns.
We have teamed up with three local firms of solicitors; Fodens, Lanyon Bowdler and PCB to offer free legal clinics to cancer patients. Hosted at the Macmillan Cancer support Service in the Hamar Centre at Royal Shrewbury Hospital, these clinics allow patients to chat to a professional about a legal concern that is causing them concern, distress or anxiety.
Upcoming Clinic Dates:
Appointments must be booked in advance.
We couldn’t do the work we do without our amazing volunteers and because of this we’re always looking for new enthusiastic supporters to join us.
