Roger's Story

Roger was inspired to raise money for Lingen Davies after witnessing the incredible work the oncology staff do everyday.
In November 2015, Roger was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and with his wife unable to accompany him for his first day of treatment, due to illness, he was left feeling a little apprehensive. His son, Chris, offered to take the day off work and came with Roger to the Lingen Davies Centre.
We spent the whole day in the centre that day; 9-5; and it was in those hours that we both realised how amazing the staff were! They work tirelessly to make your experience as stress-free as possible. We knew that we wanted to do something to help these services. Until you need the service, you don’t realise the amount of staff if takes to help all these people and the good job they do.
6 months later, Chris held a football competition along with darts and a raffle; he had 4 teams of 11-a-side football and held the competition two years running. He raised £2290 in total – £750 contributed to our last appeal and bought a piece of the jigsaw and £540 went towards purchasing a bench – you can read more about Roger’s bench below. Another £1000 was donated to the charity from money raised through these events.
From then on Roger and his family have been fundraising for us – earlier this year we installed a bench outside the Lingen Davies centre that Roger and his family and friends had raised money for. He came to us with the idea after noticing there was nowhere to sit to wait for transport and he didn’t want to spend anymore time in the centre than necessary. Read more about Roger’s bench.
Sadly, Roger passed away in June 2018 but won’t be forgotten for all he did for Lingen Davies. Roger was always setting himself personal targets and his fundraising total stands at £1743.46…he’s raised this through bucket collections at the pantomime and selling Easter raffle tickets & Christmas cards in the centre. Roger also regularly volunteered his time to help us out at events such as the finish line water station at Shrewsbury Half Marathon.
Organising your own fundraising event, in aid of Lingen Davies, is a wonderful way to support the charity and contribute to funding our projects. Our friendly team are happy to help with providing posters, tickets and flyers, as well as promoting your event on our website and social media channels.
Fundraising events could include a bake sale, charity ball, themed evening, tractor run, 24hr ‘athon’ of your favourite hobby, music event…this list is endless! Get in contact to discuss your ideas and we’ll help however we can.
