Introducing the new Cancer Champions Coordinator for Shropshire

We love to get people talking about cancer and our fantastic Cancer Champions do just that – they get the conversation going across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Powys.

This amazing group of volunteers are empowering and encouraging people in their community, at work and other walks of life to take up cancer screening, spot the early signs of cancer and seek help. We are hoping to reach even more people across Shropshire now, thanks to a new coordinator in the county.

Welcome to Rebecca Hennessey, from Oswestry, the new Shropshire Cancer Champions Coordinator employed by Qube as part of the partnership Cancer Champions project. Rebecca will be working alongside Miranda Ashwell (our LiveLife Project Lead) to recruit more Cancer Champions and get more people talking – ultimately helping to save more lives.

Rebecca has spent 25 years working as a music therapist in health and educational settings. She was recruited by the NHS as a Clinical Caseworker to support people nationally during the Covid pandemic and has also worked for Coed Lleol/Small Woods as a Woodland Wellbeing Project Officer. There Rebecca organised and managed groups to help improve wellbeing through spending time together outdoors.

She said: “I am really excited to be joining the team of Cancer Champions.

“Throughout my previous roles I have supported people facing health inequalities to improve their health and wellbeing so I am pleased to be able to bring my experience to a new setting and continue to make a difference.

“I am keen to keep supporting people and improve their health and wellbeing as a Cancer Champion Coordinator.”

When not fulfilling this vital role, Rebecca can be found walking her dog, singing, playing the piano or doing many craft activities.

Lingen Davies Cancer Fund joined forces with Qube in Oswestry to deliver the Cancer Champions campaign and it is part of a wider programme of work that’s being delivered nationally by NHS England called Core20PLUS.

A huge warm welcome to Rebecca!
