Wellbeing

Your general wellbeing is really important during and after your treatment. If you are being treated by Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust (SaTH) you will be able to access services through the Hamar Help and Support Centre at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Lingen Davies funded the Help and Support Centre in 1991, following a legacy donation from a local GP, Linnie Hamar.

The centre now hosts a range of services, including support groups, counselling, holistic therapies, and wig fitting. Everyone is different, and you may find some of these services are not for you, but we do encourage you to go along and see what is available.

Physical Activity

Keeping fit and active during your treatment can make a real difference to how you feel. While you might not feel like doing much exercise, even a small amount can help you to stay strong, feel less tired, and manage your weight and general health.

It is important that you do exercise that is appropriate for your fitness level and cancer- for example, if you have a cancer that is affecting your bones, you may be more at risk of fractures and therefore high-impact activities may not be good for you. You may also need to think about where you exercise- if your immune system is affected by your treatment, you may wish to avoid a public gym.

Speak to your doctor or Clinical Nurse Specialist about your options- doing some exercise is great, but it’s important to make sure you are not putting yourself at risk!

If you are being treated at Shrewsbury or Telford, you may wish to speak to the team who support a programme called Get Active, Feel Good. This programme is funded until 2021 by the Lingen Davies 40th Anniversay Appeal. They are here to give you advice and support on how to get exercising, what is right for you, and how you might benefit from it.

More information on Get Active, Feel Good can be found here.

Cancer Research UK have some good information on exercising with cancer here.

Before you undertake a programme of exercise, particularly if it is something new to you, please make sure you speak to your doctor or CNS and take their advice!

We are still building our directory of services and links to online support- if you know about a relevant wellbeing service that isn’t listed, please let us know by emailing lingendavies@sath.nhs.uk Please note we do not currently accept commercial listings.

Please call or email ahead to check times, dates and locations of support group meetings before you leave home. Many of the groups we link to are run by volunteers, and plans may change depending on their availability.
