Walking Tennis with Shropshire Tennis
Shrewsbury
Bookings for Walking Tennis sessions from July 2026 are now OPEN. Please see more details below.
These tennis sessions, suitable for all ages and experience, are for adults living with and beyond cancer.
The sessions take place at the Cathie Sabin Community Tennis Centre – a 2 court airhall in Shrewsbury – and are led by an experienced level 3 coach from Tennis Shropshire.
The sessions will be tailored to the abilities of those attending, however they are most likely to be based on walking tennis – an extremely accessible form of the sport which can be played by everyone. Walking tennis is played on a full sized tennis court with normal tennis racquets however the balls used are lower compression, which slows their bounce and gives players more time. The only other change to the rules is that two bounces of the ball are allowed, and the second bounce must be within the court.
Participants are welcome to use their own racquets however equipment can be provided for anyone who doesn’t already have it. The only items you’ll need to bring are sports shoes and comfortable clothing.
Tennis is a very social sport and there is a lot of science showing the significant mental and physical health benefits it gives players. Since its introduction to Shropshire, walking tennis has grown strongly and once people have tried it, experience shows that they go on to play regularly because they enjoy it so much.
